Happy Birthday, Cyle! A Hunting Party

I decided to have a full-blown birthday party for Cyle this year: theme, decorations, dessert bar, games, favors and matching clothes!

I made Clarey a little camouflage dress ...
... and the boys matching outfits with camo squirrels and camo shorts.

Our grandmas,
our friends,
and our families
were able to join us.

We played Pin the White Tail on the Deer and the kids had a hard time with the bandanna over their eyes.
Anna had a bit of a hard time finding the wall. Sorry Anna, I just couldn't resist adding in this picture of Grandma Arnold. Clearly she is afraid you'll walk into her. For the record, Anna totally missed the picture of the deer... but so did I.

Our boys had so much fun playing with Sawyer and Whitney. They are just adorable!

Later we broke out some weaponry and had a shoot-off. Two crow decoys, two turkey decoys, one child-sized bow and four arrows. I missed who won. At the end of the first round we had a four-way tie with two hits: Curt, Kathy, Sarah and Lorie.

To finish up the party we had some good-ole funnel cakes. We had a great time!

Salt Dough Lizards

Last week we made up a big batch of salt dough and the boys created lizards, complete with toothpick tails. Even Clarey got in on the play. We baked them and let them dry for the next day. As Clayton put it, "We've got new toys!" They've really enjoyed lots of dramatic play with their lizards. And if anything happens to them, we'll just make up another batch of dough and make some more.

Why I Love My Scrub Sink

This is why I love, love, love, love, love, love having a scrub sink in my laundry room. I don't think I need to say any more.

Biscuity Goodness

Don't these biscuits just make your mouth water? Cyle has requested them at least once a week for the past month. Paired up with whole hog pork sausage, it just doesn't get much better.

Clarey

10 quick things about Clarey:
1. She is now 9 - NINE - months old, I can't believe it...
2. She weighs 19 lbs and is 27 1/2" tall
3. She has 6 teeth
4. She is a super crawler
5. She is now pulling herself up - on everything, everywhere
6. She loves her brothers more than anything
7. She says 3 sounds, 'Dada,' 'Nahnah,' and 'bah bah,' which is her favorite
8. She is too big for baby food, at least she thinks so
9. She is perfectly content to sit in the hammock with Cyle all afternoon
10. She loves playing in the bath

Hangers

It doesn't seem to matter how many toys we have in our house, everyday objects are still the source of so much play. Last week I brought home a box of new hangers. (My fabulous, wonderful, best ever IKEA hangers don't fit the closet system here...) The kids were so excited about the hangers. They played for at least 30 minutes with them. Clayton arranged them in a big design on the floor. Clarey quickly destroyed Clayton's design and chewed on them. Levi spent the most time very methodically hanging them on the baby gate and counting them. Who would have thought?

Tall Paintings

Since reading about Tall Paintings on Teacher Tom's blog, I've just been itching to do it with the boys. Finally, this week, I got my chance. I love it when opportunity presents itself. While watching Wild Kratts (that's a whole post in itself), Clayton heard the phrase, "And gravity wins again!" He immediately asked, "What's gravity?" So we've been talking about what goes up, must come down. And then it hit me, tall painting is perfect!

First we had to build our "tall" part of the painting. Both boys were given some wood scraps that they constructed into towers. We glued them together on a big piece of scrap cardboard and let them dry overnight.

Clayton chose to make his like stairs.

Levi just wanted it TALL.

The next morning, as soon as Clarey was down for her nap, we raced outside and started painting.

The previous homeowners left lots of paint in our storage room and it was the perfect consistency.

The boys poured and poured - watching the paint go down, down, down.

Gravity just kept on working. Pulling that paint down the tower.

My favorite part is the swirling at the bottom.

Our surface wasn't quite level, but that ended up being okay. We got to talk about how the gravity works even more.

We set them off in the yard to dry. And while I ran in to clean up the paint mess, the boys decided to decorate their art even more with grass clippings. (Of course, I had already put the camera away...) When I walked back out, Clayton said, "Look! We're being even more creative! We're adding grass to our houses!" And Levi added, "Don't you love it?" I do. I do love it.

Why I Love Legos

First, let me just say that I love Legos. And I really love my children playing with Legos. There are just so many things we can do with them. Their little brains are learning so much while we're all having so much fun.

Except for Clarey. She eats them. So she gets to play with her big, baby-friendly blocks instead.

Today, Clayton used the Legos to make patterns. We made lots and lots of different patterns. Some with different colors. Some with different sizes. Some with different Lego shapes. We had a good game of "Guess the Pattern." One person would make a pattern and then the others had to figure out what it was.

Legos are also great because not only did Levi create the trees, but then he used them in dramatic play. They were a home for his frog, which was driving the truck, by the way...
Then we all worked together to build a house for Clayton's wormy lizard.
